BIOGRAPHY

Roberta Tucci graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from the School of Visual Arts in
1984. While at SVA in New York City she was strongly influenced by the conceptual minimalist art of the 1980’s.  Her first exhibition was in 1984 at The Visual Arts Gallery
in Soho.

While studying at the Tyler School of Art in Rome in 1987, Roberta developed an interest in Ancient Roman and Etruscan art. After starting out as a young American artist from the 1980’s contemporary New York art scene, Roberta became captivated by a contrast—the art of historic Italy. The accumulated and eroded layers of visual imagery that coexist in distressed Roman frescoes and Etruscan wall paintings especially fascinated her. During this period Roberta changed the focus of her work from sculpture to painting.  To do so she used pigmented wax on wooden board to build up and scrape off multiple layers of accumulating imagery. But unlike Roman or Etruscan painters Roberta created abstract forms.

Roberta’s work in encaustic continued until the late 1990’s, when she attended an
MFA Program in Painting at the University of Delaware.  Here she changed the primary medium of her painting from encaustic on wood to acrylic on stretched canvas. The change from wax to acrylic also allowed her to produce much larger works, layering acrylic glaze and varnish to develop paintings with even more strata of accumulated imagery.  Using this technique she was able to begin producing the studio art and large public-works commissions that she continues to develop. In addition to her studio practice, Roberta is a professor of studio art at Delaware State University.
